As the art of crafting cocktails continues to ride the wave of innovative mixologists and handlebar-mustached bartenders, the limits of the proverbial “box” are constantly being altered. From the libation geniuses at Washington’s Rally Pizza have taken a page from their Italian heritage with the uniquely delicious Squirrel Feeder. Drawing its distinctive flavor from the housemade Nocino (a sticky dark brown liqueur made from walnuts in the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy) this is one you have to try to believe.
What You’ll Need:
1.5 oz Bourbon
1 oz Nocino
0.5 oz Campari
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
Ginger Beer to top
How To Do It:
Combine Bourbon, nocino, Campari and lemon juice in shaker.
Add ice and shake.
Strain in a rocks glass with fresh rocks.
Top with ginger beer.
Garnish with a lemon twist.
“Every year we make our very own homemade Nocino with the green walnuts from our big old tree. We add lemon zest, cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans to round out the flavor. This drink picks up on the lemon, and compliments the cinnamon with the fresh bite of ginger beer, perfect for fall.” – Alan Maniscalco, Owner
As for the name “Squirrel Feeder”, I’m really not quite sure, and with a layered taste like this, I don;t care.
